TRB’s Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, No. 2646 consists of 10 papers that explore freight data and asset management.

This report provides approaches to managing park-and-ride facilities, from developing the park-and-ride concept for a community to day-to-day management. Key themes include design, implementation, operations, and maintenance of these facilities.

The Infrastructure Carbon Estimator Version 2.1 is a spreadsheet tool that estimates the lifecycle energy and greenhouse gas emissions from the construction and maintenance of transportation facilities based on national emissions and energy use factors for materials and construction. Version 2.1 of the tool was developed through FHWA Transportation Pooled Fund TPF-5(362), led by the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Transit agencies are interested in assessing the short-, mid-, and long-term performance of their infrastructure with the objective of enhancing resiliency and efficiency. This report addresses three distinct aspects of New Jersey’s Transit System: 1) resiliency of bridge infrastructure, 2) resiliency of public transit systems, and 3) efficiency of transit systems with an emphasis on paratransit service. This project proposed a conceptual framework to assess the performance and resiliency for bridge structures in a transit network before and after disasters utilizing structural health monitoring (SHM), finite element (FE) modeling and remote sensing using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR). The public transit systems in NY/NJ were analyzed based on their vulnerability, resiliency, and efficiency in recovery following a major natural disaster.

MnDOT and other state departments of transportation (DOTs) distribute federal funds from Federal Highway Administration and Federal Transit Administration—PL funds and 5303 funds, respectively—to metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs) to support the MPOs’ metropolitan planning activities. There are times when an MPO may be unable to spend all of the federal funds it receives in a fiscal year, which can result in carryover funds. MnDOT is considering a change in its current practice to permit MPOs to carry over federal planning funding for up to five years. To inform possible changes in MnDOT’s management of unspent federal metropolitan planning funds, this Transportation Research Synthesis uses a survey of selected state DOTs to gather information about other states’ policies and practices in permitting and managing carryover funds, including MPO and DOT actions, and the benefits and drawbacks of these practices.

The National Public Transportation Safety Plan is intended to guide the national effort in managing the safety risks and safety hazards within the public transportation systems in the United States. It includes the status of safety performance within the transit industry, provides a framework for applying Safety Management Strategies to transit agencies, lays out FTA’s strategic approach to safety performance, and provides information about the actions FTA has taken to improve transit safety performance.

This final rule is the third and last in a series of three related rulemakings that together establishes a set of performance measures for State departments of transportation (State DOT) and Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPO) to use as required by the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21) and the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act.

This long range plan describes Minnesota's goals for multimodal transportation through 2036. Based on the family of plans under the umbrella of Minnesota GO, the state's vision for transportation, the long range plan presents a unified approach to transportation management. Throughout the development of the long range plan, Minnesota DOT relies on a series of national, state and local partners as well as public engagement. It closes with recommended policies, strategies, and a detailed work plan.
